Everything You Need to Know About MNDSGN Before Going to YOH!
The Journey of an Ambivert.
The L.A. beat scene is made up of a sprawling collective of musicians cross-pollinating that has drastically reworked the idea of what it means to make beats within (and without) the hip-hop tradition. The artists that can be found in these circles—DJing at Low End Theory nights at the Airliner in Lincoln Heights, putting out tracks and albums on the Alpha Pup and Brainfeeder labels, and eventually appearing in the credits of marquee bass music and hip-hop records—have built a strong, genre- and culture-spanning connection between leftfield electronic music and underground hip-hop, subsequently attracting everyone from Thom Yorke to Kendrick Lamar. By 2013, you could even hear their music on the radio in the ersatz Los Angeles of Grand Theft Auto V.
No one suspected the Los Angeles Beat Scene would rewire the circuits of international underground music, but over the past few years its influence has become pervasive, shaping some of the biggest hip-hop albums and dictating the future of hip-hop, dance music and modern jazz. Los Angeles has always had a charm about it. A charm that has made creatives from all walks of life gravitate here to try their luck – and the story of young beatmaker Ringgo Ancheta AKA Mndsgn is no different. Growing up in south New Jersey, and raised on a steady diet of Gospel music at church, and B-Boy culture at home, and soon he started experimenting with beat-making. He befriended fellow producer Knxwledge and the two formed the influential Klipmode collective along with Devonwho and Suzi Analogue.
Tracing back MND’s musical journey it’s hard to pin point his exact sound. When trying to compare one album to the next, one finds that he has darted from reference to reference in a way that would make his next move unpredictable, but he ties them all together in a way that makes perfect sense.
The beauty of his music is that it is so multi-faceted – there are so many varying aspects of it that move in different directions and even, at times, conflict with one another, but they all somehow still resonate in unison. What Ringgo does reflects the versatility not just of him as an artist but of the art. Mndsgn’s signature sound ranges across numerous genres and influences that work in unison to create his multi-faceted, trademark vibes. As such, his unique sound has garnered a wide fan base only made more international by his overseas tour with label Stones Throw through Japan and later Europe in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
Early Days: Discovery
The year was twenty zero nine…(James Earl Jones voice)
A star falls as MJ finds his final resting place, panic struck citizens deal with the aftershock of a recession and Foil helmet bedroom beat junkies rappel to plumb the depths of Myspace as this – was the year that social media went mainstream.
Our introduction to Mndsgn came in the form of a track he remixed, ‘brake time,’ on Devonwho’s “Thumbtracks Remixes 1.5” around 2009 /2010. The track had an offbeat percussion and lo-fi textures that was really engaging. At the time it felt very experimental but looking back it contained many signature elements still present in his production today.
The same electric medium that sparked hyper social connectivity between artists also offered listeners an opportunity to discover up and coming artists… after doing a li’l digging on the final frontiers of Myspace we discovered that Mndsgn had a crew called Klipmode with a platform Klipkasts that led us to discover various other artists i.e; Shlohmo, Jonwayne, Sir Froderick, Teebs, Pudge, Ohbliv, Mono-Poly and more. After that there was no turning back, not only were we exposed to a diverse array on new artists but we had now developed an insatiable appetite for Mndsgn.
