Introducing: Kerem Akdag – ‘Loungin’
From Istanbul with love.
Turkish artist Kerem Akdag’s combined expertise as a drummer and producer is audibly apparent in the latest DTW release, “Loungin“. The multi-faceted musician skillfully modifies jazz over a fascinating range of tempos and patterns, beautifully outlining his perpetual influences of funk, soul, breaks, and hip hop. Loungin’ EP is also a reflection of Kerem striving to maintain his soul and creativity while living in the chaotic environment of Istanbul.
Kerem’s style is understated yet deeply compelling , drawing you in further with each passing track. Whatever is a smooth, low-slung hip hop starter, while Loungin’ stays true to its signature style with jazz and melodic-infused basslines. Steppin Out picks up the pace with some Afro percussions, and Get There ends powerfully with a fresh, breakbeat intro before a mellowing into an atmospheric, future-soul breakdown. Although each track is stylistically distinct, the EP is tied together by a strong human feel achieved through endless experimentation with live performance and recording techniques.
Despite his relative newcomer status, Kerem’s music has already received support from such luminaries as Osunlade, Josh Wink, Hans Thalau, Shur-I-Kan, Dubfire, Detroit Swindle, Lefto and most recently, was involved in a late night improvisational jam with Henry Wu and his Yussef Kamaal Trio. The release of the Loungin’ EP cements Kerem’s reputation as Turkey’s most soulful, and one of the brightest stars on the Darker Than Wax roster.
