Stream: Vince Staples – ‘Prima Donna’
“Is it real, is it, is it real? Real, real, real…”
The follow-up to Vince Staples’ “Summertime ’06” has dropped “Prima Donna” is a 6 track album featuring A$AP Rocky and Kilo Kish. Even though not seen as an official feature, the first voice we hear rapping on Prima Donna, does not belong to Vince Staples, instead, it belongs to André 3000, and it comes from a song that André made before he added the 3000 to his name. It’s the whole final verse from “ATLiens,” the title track from an album that came out 20 years, almost to the day, before Prima Donna.
Prima Donna was crafted by a trio of producers most artists can only dream of: James Blake, DJ Dahi and No I.D. While production is certainly awe-inspiring, there’s no denying Vince Staples’ ability to skillfully expose the hollowness of hip-hop’s frequently self-aggrandizing lyrics. At just 23 years old, Vince Staples has put the “fakeness” of not just the music industry, but of society, in his crosshairs, and where some of the best rappers make you feel powerful when you listen to them, Staples does the opposite. He makes you feel powerless, and that’s what makes him such a compelling writer.
