WeUnderGround Presents: “Slept On” Part 1 – ft. Esta, Atu, Gossamer
Because the internet is such a big place, we have come up with the Slept On series which will be chronicling music/ producers that we’ve come across, listen to and enjoy, that may have not been featured at the time of the their albums being released. So as we’re moving forward, we’re also taking a look back at what has happened ensuring that you don’t miss out on anything…so here goes…!
ESTA – “FREE.LOVE”
ESTA – “Gradient” Via Soulection
It was back in October 2012 after a Soulection Radio session that Esta was really brought to our attention. We landed on his Soundcloud and we were immediately impressed by his catalog of production. It was this feeling that we felt as if we were behind on time musically and had been missing out on one of the most diverse artists that we never heard of. Within no time we reached out and started working on Gradient.
There is an undeniable presence that Esta creates within his music that will have you wanting more. Gradient brings sound barriers together to create a well-balanced sound that incorporates soulful and future-bass vibrations. Whether it’s high energy drum and melodic patterns or timeless vocal chops from Quadron or M.I.A., Esta manages to bring all avenues of sound together as one. This is just the first of many Soulection releases to come from Esta. This man is here to change the sound of tomorrow.
“Gradient is a little batch of vibes I put together in this weird transition period of mine. It’s pretty much me trying to discover and define my sound. I wanted to show versatility in all my tracks but with keeping it within the same vibes and keeping it very cinematic.”
Atu – “Pictures On Silence” Via Soulection
20-year-old Atu comes to us from Ann Arbor, Michigan courtesy of Sango. When we first heard Atu’s music, we were blown away with his clear 90’s r&b influences and diverse future sound. The Malawian producer delicately fuses bass and soul, adding his signature, elegant vocal sampling to the mix. He incorporates unique time signatures and plays nicely with the silence, consistently leaving you wanting more. Atu is poised today to deliver the sound of tomorrow through his progressive aural direction.
“All proceeds will go to EveryChild in hopes of providing some financial assistance based in rural areas of Malawi.
Gossamer – “Gossamer EP” Via The Melt
Gossamer EP is comprised of broken rhythms, big atmospheres and vivacious beats. A broad range of styles are incorporated, starting slow with the darker heartfelt ambient track “seroquelyl,” and then changing pace with the soulful, feel-good, head-nodder “didn’t mean to.” The third track, “Name tape,” is the most versatile of the bunch, driven by live instrumentation, soft vocal samples and organic textures. The fourth track, “U(Browns Round),” splices off the EP with a hint of eeriness and brings us back to Gossamer’s 90’s hip hop roots.
